Man Who Trains

Text: 1 Corinthians 9:24–27

Phase: Formation — Build the Man

CORE TRUTH

“You don’t drift into strength—you train for it.”

SCRIPTURE

“Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it.”

— 1 Corinthians 9:24

“Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.”

— v.25

“I discipline my body and keep it under control…”

— v.27

TEACHING BREAKDOWN

1. A MAN DOESN’T DRIFT—HE DECIDES

Paul compares manhood to training, not trying.

  • Nobody accidentally becomes strong

  • Nobody accidentally becomes disciplined

  • Nobody accidentally becomes a man of God

Drift leads to:

  • Weakness

  • Passivity

  • Compromise

Training leads to:

  • Strength

  • Clarity

  • Authority

Truth:

If you don’t choose discipline, you’re choosing decay.

2. DISCIPLINE IS NOT PUNISHMENT—IT’S PREPARATION

Paul says athletes train for a prize.

Men today:

  • Want results without process

  • Want strength without sacrifice

  • Want respect without consistency

Paul:

  • Restrained himself

  • Trained daily

  • Lived intentionally

Discipline is how God builds capacity in a man

Truth:

Your future is built by what you do daily.

3. IF YOU CAN’T RULE YOUR BODY, YOU CAN’T RULE YOUR LIFE

“I discipline my body…”

This hits everything:

  • Lust

  • Laziness

  • Food

  • Anger

  • Time

A man who lacks self-control:

  • Cannot lead a family

  • Cannot lead a business

  • Cannot lead spiritually

Self-control is the foundation of authority

Truth:

If your flesh leads, your life follows it into chaos.

4. TRAIN LIKE THERE’S A PRIZE (BECAUSE THERE IS)

Paul says we run for an eternal reward.

Modern men:

  • Live casually

  • Think short-term

  • Avoid sacrifice

Biblical men:

  • Live with purpose

  • Think eternally

  • Train with intensity

Your life is not a casual game—it’s a race

Truth:

How you live now determines what you stand on later.

⚔️ GROUP DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. Where in your life are you currently undisciplined?

  2. What do you tend to drift into when you’re not intentional?

  3. What is one area where your body is controlling you instead of you controlling it?

  4. What would your life look like in 6 months if you actually trained daily?

  5. Why do you think most men avoid discipline?
