Week 3 — When Obedience Costs Everything (Abraham)
You finally get the call.
The promotion.
The raise.
The opportunity you’ve been praying for.
More money.
More stability.
A better life for your family.
You thank God.
You feel like He came through.
---
Then a few weeks in…
You start to notice it.
- Numbers don’t add up
- Conversations feel hidden
- Decisions don’t sit right
And then it becomes clear—
This isn’t just uncomfortable.
It’s wrong.
---
Now you’re in a different moment.
Not celebration…
Decision.
Do you stay—
because your family needs it?
Or do you walk away—
because God said so?

---
Most men say:
“God will provide.”
But what happens when obedience threatens that provision?
Some of the hardest moments of obedience
aren’t when God withholds…
They’re when He asks you to give back
what He already gave you.
---
“Abraham was 100 years old when his son Isaac was born to him.”
— Genesis 21:5
Isaac wasn’t just a son.
He was:
- the promise
- the future
- the proof that God was faithful
Everything Abraham had hoped for
was standing right in front of him.
And God said:
“Lay it down.”
---
“Take your son… your only son Isaac, whom you love… and offer him.”
— Genesis 22:1–2
---
What Makes This So Hard
God didn’t explain.
God didn’t reassure.
God didn’t tell Abraham how it would end.
He just said:
“Go.”
---
The Response of a Man
“So Abraham got up early in the morning…”
— Genesis 22:3
No hesitation.
No negotiation.
No delay.
---
Truth #1 — Obedience Moves Immediately
Most men delay:
- “I’ll pray about it more”
- “I’ll wait for a better time”
- “I’ll figure it out first”
But delayed obedience is still disobedience.
---
The Walk
Abraham walks beside Isaac.
Knowing what’s coming.
Isaac asks:
“Where is the lamb?”
— Genesis 22:7
Abraham answers:
“God Himself will provide.”
---
Truth #2 — Obedience Trusts God’s Character
Abraham didn’t understand the command.
But he trusted:
- God is good
- God is faithful
- God keeps His word
---
Abraham builds the altar.
Binds his son.
Raises the knife.
This is where most men stop.
---
Truth #3 — Most Men Obey Until It Costs Too Much
We follow God when:
- It’s convenient
- It’s clear
- It benefits us
But when it costs:
- comfort
- security
- control
That’s where obedience dies.
---
The Moment Everything Changes
“Do not lay a hand on the boy… for now I know that you fear God…”
— Genesis 22:11–12
God stops him.
But not before obedience was proven.
---
Truth #4 — God Tests What You Won’t Let Go Of
God wasn’t trying to take Isaac.
He was revealing:
Do you trust the promise…
or the God who made it?
---
### The Provision
“Abraham looked up and saw a ram…”
— Genesis 22:13
God provided.
But only after Abraham obeyed.
---
Truth #5 — Provision Follows Obedience
Not before.
Not when it’s comfortable.
After.
---
Bring It Back to You
This isn’t about Abraham anymore.
What is your Isaac?
- A job you shouldn’t be in
- A habit you won’t let go of
- Control over your life
- A relationship God told you to leave
---
The Hard Question
What has God already told you to do…
that you haven’t done?
---
Iron Shepherds Principle
A man of God obeys—
even when it costs him everything.
---
Discussion Questions
1. Where is God calling you to obey right now?
2. What are you afraid will happen if you do?
3. Do you trust God as a provider—or only when it’s easy?
4. What would immediate obedience look like this week?
---
Practical Challenge
This week:
Do the thing you’ve been avoiding.
- Make the call
- Walk away
- Step into the conversation
- Remove what needs to be removed
No delay.
---
Closing Prayer
“God,
I trust You when it’s easy… but I struggle when it costs me.
Give me the strength to obey You anyway.
Help me trust Your character more than my comfort.
Show me what I’ve been holding back… and give me the courage to lay it down.
Make me a man who moves when You speak.
Amen.”
---
Final Statement
A boy follows God when it makes sense.
A man follows God
when it costs him everything.
This is not information. This is a standard.
